Mailing Tips

Try marketing your product or service using a colored or odd size envelope / postcard so your direct mailing stands out.

Presentations must be neat and creative.

Always be modest and avoid using unrealistic income figures or excessive buzz words. If you make your program sound ridiculous or to good to be true it will most likely get tossed or deleted.

Be patient. It takes time to get results. Direct-mail campaigns using a mailing list can take between four to six weeks to see any real results while e-mail campaigns typically take between 7 to 10 business days.

Try setting a deadline for your program to create some urgency. Usually, the imposition of a deadline or expiration date increases the response rate because the recipient understands they only have limited time to act or respond.

Try to include some testimonials with your mailing. Nothing speaks better for your product or service than an end-user that is totally pleased.

Always try to get to the point quickly. If you begin your letter with general information and do not make your point, you will lose the reader. It is very critical that you make your point in the first few lines of the letter, at least in the first five.

Try giving away a free gift to increase response and highlight the free-gift offer prominently.

Try offering a discount or incentive for a faster response and order.

Make sure your offer is easy to understand and respond to.

Keep all your paragraphs short and to the point.

Include a business card in the direct mailing where ever applicable.

Be sure to include your website address with all mailings or emailing when applicable.

Don't delay your mailing campaign by trying to mail in bulk in just one day.

When sending emails try putting something like “Re: Info You Requested” in the subject line. This method can make your email stand out and thus may increase the chances of your program being read in a timely manner. Mentioning money or using the “$” symbol in the subject matter can often result in your email being placed into a spam folder versus an inbox.

According to a Yale University study, some of the most persuasive words are: discovery, easy, guarantee, health, love, money, new, proven, results, safely, save, you, free, bonus, success, order now. Try using some or all of these in your next direct mail campaign.

The more times you mail the better the response rate. The Direct Marketing Association recommends mailing four times. A one to three percent response rate is considered standard.

Spell out the benefits of your product or service. You should be seen as offering something different than your competitors. Find a unique benefit to highlight.
